Under the capable direction of two talented sisters, Francine Stirling and Cheryl Borthick, the Kern Valley Chorus has placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd in Region 11's small chorus division of Sweet Adelines International Annual Competition. KVC became the first chorus to receive the Audience Choice Award for "Most Entertaining" in Region 11 for two years in a row, receiving this prestigious award in 2009 and 2010! And in 2014 KVC is setting the standard again as it is the first chorus EVER to perform in the new Open Division, combining great singing with great acting, characterization, and dialogue - not to mention great FUN!
These two musical ladies are charter members of Kern Valley Chorus having joined in 1972. After seeing a very tiny ad in the local newspaper for "Sweet Adelines," Cheryl talked her sister, Francine, into coming with her to check out this group which she thought was a singing group. You see, Cheryl was without a car and she needed her sister to drive them to the rehearsal hall! Since Cheryl and Francine had been singing all their lives with their mother and other sister, they thought they could join right in - no problem! Francine of course said "yes" and they walked in to a goup of older ladies who handed them a sheet of music which they were to sight read on the spot for their audition. They passed!
One year later they were chosen as the new directors for this small but mighty chorus and they have never looked back! Currently Cheryl and Francine are the longest co-directors in Sweet Adeline history.
Not only are they brilliant musically but they care about each member knowing each one's voice and personality. They strive to use each member's strengths while encouraging each ones growth as a singer and a person.
Our co-directors are the heart of Kern Valley Chorus!
